Violence in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Background Guide

The longstanding conflict between Israel and Palestine, for both land and Palestine's nation status, is continuously causing radical violence and casualties in the region. According to German sociologist Gunnar Heinsohn (2007), a shocking 51,000 have died in violent clashes between the two groups since 1950, two years after the formation of Israel. Such violence, taking place not only locally but also all around the world, is a significant threat to global security and Middle Eastern peace, and thus needs to be dealt with at an international level. With this agenda, the United Nations Security Council will be encouraged to come up with a package of long-term and short-term measures, not necessarily to terminate the dispute itself, but to minimise (and, possibly, eradicate) the violence that takes place as part of the conflict.

Global Air Pollution

BACKGROUND GUIDE
The World Health Organization is a specialized agencies in the United Nations founded at 1947. The overall goal of the strategy is to promote and protect health through healthy eating and physical activity. As of 2016, the group has 194 member states, and acts as one of the main agencies aimed to maintaining global health. Ever since the industrial revolution, air pollution consistently exacerbated into a . The second industrial revolution led to the increase of gas emission from motor vehicle and factories. Currently,  WHO data shows that 91% of the whole world’s population is exposed to an environment in which the air pollution level exceeds WHO limit. As a result, an estimate of seven million people are dying every year because of respiratory diseases created by air pollution. Although the WHO has set a limit of 70 to 80 micrograms per cubic metre. Only 3% of the people in developing countries are living in a moderate air pollution level. In GECMUN V, delegates will discuss both short and long-term solutions to global air pollution problem. Given that air pollution is not bound to a political boundaries, delegates must collaborate to develop international measures to regulate air quality.

Money Laundering

Background Guide
Money laundering refers to financial transactions in which criminals, like terrorist groups, attempt to disguise the proceeds and sources of their illegal activities. This process is to ensure that the money is not taken away by the authorities that are tracking the source of the money. Those money launderers employ many different strategies to hide the origin of the money. This is part of the “Terrorist Financing”, which refers to any activities that provides financing or financial support terrorists.
The use of money laundering to fund terrorist groups is a topic that has become increasingly important in our world today. With infusions of capital from various donors, these groups are allowed to flourish and spread throughout their base area, giving them the opportunity to terrorize the local population, and threaten international peace and security with their calls for violence. With the rise of the Islamic State, among other terrorist groups, it is very important that this topic is discussed to stem the flow of monetary capital to these groups.

Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Background Guide
Through this conference, UNHRC seeks capable measures to protect the Syrian refugees. It is significant for all delegates to understand various violations happening and consider all gradients of the issue. Considering the depth of the Syrian war, international society must come up with a realistic, practical, and effective solution. As the conflict has been not only a major one, but a long-standing matter, it must be approached both pragmatically, but with a concrete solution in mind.

League of Nations (Historical)

World Disarmament Conference, 1932-1934

Background Guide
The League of Nations was established in 1919, following the fourteen points raised by Woodrow Wilson in the 1919 Versailles Settlement. By tackling different social and humanitarian issues, and settling down various territorial disputes, the League had promoted various approaches and attempts to maintain collective security until the outbreak of the Second World War.

Ambassadors from sixty different countries were gathered together in the 1932-33 Disarmament Conference. The focus of the discussion was on Germany, severely weakened and forced to reduce its military to a great amount under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. Countries debated upon whether the whole of the international society to disarm, or promote rearmament of Germany up to a certain standard.

In GECMUN V, this committee will revive a significant moment in world history, and let the delegates change the fate of the world in the 1930s.

Harmful Traditional Practices on Female Children
Background Guide
The UNICEF committee provides humanitarian and assistance to children in need from different countries. All children deserve the rights to be protected from violence, exploitation, and abuse in every ways. However, in different parts of the world, there are still millions of children who are suffering from these major factors every day. This committee takes action on child rights, innovation of children, education, and protection and survival of youth. Throughout the world, there are issues regarding to child marriage, female genital mutilation, honour killings, and violence against women and girls. Even though the society is gradually promoting and supporting gender equality, females are still being unequally treated today, regardlessly. Especially in areas in the Middle East and Africa, early marriages, frequent pregnancies, and physical, sexual, and psychological violence and such happens endlessly. By ending these problems, children would be able to live in a better world. This committee aims to provide governments to enforce and strengthen the laws and hopefully work with communities to change norms and practices that exacerbate children and women’s vulnerabilities.

US Constitutional Convention in 1787

Katherine Yoon | Yoona Choi | Rosa Ueon
Future of the American Constitution

Background Guide
May 25, 1787. The Revolutionary War is over and the colonies have finally gained independence from the British Crown. Despite efforts for a cohesive national identity through the Articles of Confederation, the lack of federal authority has prevented the unity of the 13 states. Without the power to enforce both domestic and international policies for the United States, the fight for a country is far from over. In order to revise the existing constitution, 24 delegates have gathered in Philadelphia. How will you determine the fate of America? In this committee, the delegates will be rewriting the history of the United States and creating their own solutions to the issues the Articles pose. Events after May 25, 1787 have not occurred.

Case concerning the territorial sovereignty over the Falkland Islands (Falkland Dispute) (Argentina vs. United Kingdom)

Background Guide
Argentina and United Kingdom have had a conflict concerning the territorial sovereignty over the Falkland Islands for 200 years. It all started from the controversy whether Spain or United Kingdom first discovered the Falklands in 16th century. Disputation still undetermined, Argentina gained its independence from Spain in 1816, and they started to claim dominion of the Falklands. In 1823, Argentina dispatched governor-general and imposed a direct rule, but in 1833, United Kingdom proclaimed a self-governing dominion, established a naval base, and deported residents, which was a trigger of the British emigrating to the Falkland Islands. In 1838, Argentina suggested a disposal of the islands to United Kingdom, however, it was refused. From then, Argentina has asserted that the domination of United Kingdom over Falkland Islands is ‘illegal, and forcible occupation’ and is invalid, while United Kingdom pursued a strategy of disregarding, claiming it is ‘legal domination lasted since first discovery’. Tension intensely mounted in 1982: ‘Falklands War’ broke out, a ten-week war between Argentina and United Kingdom. It started by Argentina invading Falkland Islands with 2,500 of marines and special forces. Although Argentina occupied the whole Falkland Islands and South Georgia Island only in two days, United Kingdom recaptured Port Stanley and eventually, Argentina surrendered.

U.S. President Trump's Cabinet

Jiyu Shin | Rebecca Kim | Jay Baik
Donald Trump's Presidency (Historical Crisis)

Background Guide
Following the presidential election of 2016, President Donald Trump has selected the members of his new Cabinet. These public officials are tasked with advising the president on issues related to their respective departments. Soon after his inauguration, President Trump has begun pursuing his campaign promises of reforming the health care system and implementing new immigration policies. Balancing their responsibilities to the Executive Office and their personal agendas, the members of President Trump's Cabinet must tackle these goals, along with crises such as threats to national security, Congressional budgetary and legislative decisions, and court rulings. Crisis updates will occur in the form of social media updates, press releases, news reports, and more. Delegates should always operate according to their cabinet members' political desires. However, this crisis committee is not meant to be a perfect reenactment of past events. Delegates may be able to change the course of the Trump presidency through their actions.

WWZ: The Solanum Contagion

Diane Kang | Louis Lee | Scott Kim
Combat the Solanum Virus (Fictional Crisis)

Background Guide
In the WWZ committee, delegates will be interacting with the members inside the committee and the resources given to present a solution to the quick-changing volatile circumstance of a global apocalypse. Delegates would initially face the zombie outbreak in a random country chosen by the chairs, meaning that the crisis may entirely go beyond the movie or the book.  However, the 'infection' count would rise exponentially every second, and because the time speed during the committee session and the zombie-apocalypse universe is identical, 'how you use' your time will be a critical aspect of this committee. Few issues the delegates should consider are: global riots against massacres, use of nuclear missiles, and of course, the development of a possible cure. There will be updates on the current situation (crisis updates), along with direct interactions between 'enemy' and the delegates. In this committee, delegates will be assigned the position of either a scientist, lead of a country, or a high-ranking member of the United Nations to break-through the zombie crisis presented on the dais. The director and chair promises to provide first-time MUNers with a rich, comprehensive introduction to a crisis committee, along with an advanced, vibrant experience to skilled delegates. Delegates, we have no time to be discussing this freely. RUN (and do talk please)!

The Imitation Game

Irene Jung | Amy Cho | Denny Kim
Solve the Enigma code, and decide how to utilize this information to help Great Britain win the War. (Historical Crisis)

Background Guide
The Imitation Game is set in 1940 when World War II was still ongoing with devastating effects. We invite the delegates to be parts of the secretive code-breaking project of Great Britain and work for the victory of the Allies. The delegates will be given with two missions. Firstly, decipher the complex code –which Poland has already tried to decode but failed– created by the machine designed by the Germans: Enigma. Secondly, decide how they would utilize the decoded information to the advantage of Great Britain, and the alliance against the Axis. Defend the soldiers from the German U-boats, and lead this war towards the end. Join our committee and work with the best codebreaker-delegates from different nations; but it is never going to be easy, delegates. Good luck, delegates, and hope you can save Europe—and the world—from the Axis!

Trojan War
Jay Mo | Caroline Herman
Win back Helen in the name of Greece, Devise Battle Strategies to Fight the War, Find Level Ground Between the Gods and Humans
BACKGROUND GUIDE
When Paris was so bold as to wisk Helen away to the city of Troy, everyone knew it meant trouble: trouble for the Trojans who would be facing the wrath of the Greeks, trouble for the Greeks who knew they would end up fighting a long tiresome war in a foreign land, and trouble for some gods that knew that their reputation would depend on the war. It is your job -good gods, noble kings, warriors, and wise men of Greece- to make this war successful by toppling Troy and winning back Helen to return back to the safety of your dominions. Delegates should be prepared to dive into the battles set during the Trojan War to draft war strategies, deal with the will of the gods, and engage the enemy in psychological warfare that will determine the course of the entire fight. Please do be reminded that every single one of your decisions will be dictating the fate of millions of the men that have sworn to fight for you. Do not let their lives go to waste. Be swift, be efficient, and be wise. During the conference, delegates should expect constant crisis updates, negotiations with the representatives of the Trojans, and interactions with the gods above. There is no need for this committee to flow the way that the actual Trojan War did, so utilize your opportunities to their maximum extent, and may the gods be with you!
